Word problems, worked step by step

One of the four AFQT subtests. Solve real-world maths word problems — rates, ratios, percentages, interest, distance–rate–time and multi-step arithmetic. Every question shows a full worked solution, because getting the method right matters more than the answer.

Every subtest explained, how the AFQT and line scores work, and how to study.

What to expect

  • Four-option multiple-choice word problems, easiest first, getting harder.
  • On the real paper ASVAB: 30 questions in 36 minutes. Here: a focused 16-question set.
  • A worked, step-by-step explanation after every question.

What it measures

  • Reasoning through a problem stated in words, not symbols
  • Rates, ratios, proportions and percentages
  • Multi-step arithmetic under time pressure

Instructions

  1. 1Read the whole problem before you start — decide what's actually being asked.
  2. 2Write the numbers down and pick the operation; don't do it all in your head.
  3. 3Check the units of the answer (dollars, miles, hours) against the question.

Tips

  • Distance = rate × time. Part = percent × whole. Keep these automatic.
  • Estimate first, then compute — it catches silly answers.
  • If stuck, work backwards from the answer choices.
