To enlist in the Army you need a minimum AFQT score, and then your line scores decide which jobs you qualify for. Here's how it works.
AFQT 31 (diploma) is confirmed across sources; GED holders need 50 and face annual quota caps.
The Army builds these composite scores from the ASVAB subtests. A job qualifies you by a minimum on the relevant one.
| Composite | Built from |
|---|---|
| GT — General Technical | VE + AR |
| CL — Clerical | VE + AR + MK |
| EL — Electronics | GS + AR + MK + EI |
| FA — Field Artillery | AR + MK + MC |
| GM — General Maintenance | GS + AS + MK + EI |
| MM — Mechanical Maintenance | AS + MC + EI |
| CO — Combat | VE + AS + MC |
| OF — Operators & Food | VE + AS + MC |
| SC — Surveillance & Comms | VE + AR + AS + MC |
| ST — Skilled Technical | GS + VE + MK + MC |
The Army builds 10 "line scores" from the subtests; GT is the most widely referenced, and many jobs need two line scores (you must clear both). Some published formulas still use the retired NO/CS subtests — the ones above are the current-era consensus. Cut scores shift with recruiting demand.
A sample of Army jobs and the line score each one needs. Many jobs require two line scores — you have to clear both.
| Job | Requires |
|---|---|
| 68W Combat Medic | ST ≥ 101 |
| 11B Infantryman | CO ≥ 87 |
| 35-series Military Intelligence | ST ≥ 101 |
| 25-series Signal / IT | EL ≥ 98–105 |
| 31B Military Police | ST ≥ 91 |
