Every subtest explained, how the AFQT and line scores work, and how to study.

What to expect

  • Four-option questions about tools and shop work, sometimes with a picture.
  • On the computer ASVAB, Shop Information is a short, separately timed section (paired with Auto).
  • An explanation that names the tool and its use.

What it measures

  • Tool identification and the right tool for the job
  • Fasteners, threads and materials
  • Measuring/layout tools and shop safety

Instructions

  1. 1Learn tool families: striking, fastening, cutting (wood vs metal), drilling, gripping, measuring.
  2. 2A spirit level checks horizontal; a plumb bob checks vertical; a feeler gauge measures gaps.
  3. 3Know screws vs bolts (a bolt uses a nut) and thread direction.

Tips

  • Questions often describe a use — learn tools by what they do.
  • A hacksaw cuts metal; crosscut and rip saws cut wood.
  • Know common fasteners and basic shop safety/PPE.
